Corporate Welfare Hurts You by Robert ReichLinks to an external site.

Describe how large property tax abatements and farm subsidies for large corporations could follow the adage “good intentions, bad results”.

What would be some unintended consequences of the 2020 stimulus checks? Can you make a case for not allowing the stimulus checks?

Give one example of where you have been impacted first hand by the “unintended consequences” of a policy at home, school, or by government.

After you post your narrative, reply to at least two other students comments. Explain why you agree, or better yet, find others that take a different position and explain why you disagree.

If large property taxes are abated to be more affordable than it is for corporate, their customers and workers could have a good benefit out of it, however, some corporate makes tons of profits off of these customers and workers even if they pay less property taxes. They only think about themselves and tax every penny on their goods and services. Abatement can be a bittersweet thing for many but know that there’s always a catch to free stuff.

2. 2020 Stimulus check was like a reward for another. Not to be mistaken, it helped a lot of citizens with bills and expenses; bare in mind, nothing comes free. Inflation and high rates is one of the unintended consequences we are facing now. I believe the government intention about stimulus check to help his citizens was good but the aftermath was to pay taxes on it without us knowing.

3. I come from Ghana, West Africa; all my years being in Ghana was hard and education wasn’t a priority to some, it was every parents dream for their children to be educated and get a good career but education was expensive and it was harder to get into the university after high school. Four years ago, our current president decided to bring free education with the intention that it’ll solve the educational system; rather, it made it worse for students since there were poor management, infrastructure to accommodate students and school supplies. I believe there weren’t enough funds from investors and from the government to assist free education; so guess what? Teachers were quitting, students dropping out. There was more harm than good with the free education.

1. Large property tax abatement and farm subsidies for corporations can have unintended consequences despite good intentions. they may create an uneven playing field and hinder fair competition. Also sometimes these policies meant to help corporations end up benefiting the big players more than the smaller ones. It can lead to unfair advantages and hinder economic growth.

2. The intention behind the 2020 stimulus checks was to provide financial relief, some unintended consequences could potential inflation and increased national debt. Something that is against allowing stimulus checks is the concern that it could create dependency on government assistance and discourage individual responsibility. it’s important to consider the broader impact and the immediate need for support during challenging times.

3. One example, of unintended consequences I’ve personally experienced is when a school policy aimed at reducing cheating ended up creating a stressful and competitive environment among students. It unintentionally shifted the focus from learning to simply getting high grades. It’s important for policies to be carefully designed and regularly evaluated to avoid such unintended effects.
