Explain how research has evolved since the Florence Nightingale era.

The research culture since Nightingale’s time has changed dramatically in the last 150 years. There is little found regarding nursing research after Nightingale’s time. This may be because nursing is now viewed as a highly respected profession, versus back in the day it was seen as an apprenticeship. Nursing research is more advanced today because of the increase in nurses with proper education and credentials, federal funding that is now available, and the upgrades in research skills in faculty and students (Stolley, J. M., et. al, 2000, para. 2).

Discuss how research and EBP are different; include how you believe research supports EBP for nursing.
Research is to generate new knowledge or to validate existing knowledge based on a theory. Evidence-based practice is about translating the evidence and applying it to clinical decision making. In order for evidence-based practice to exist, we need the evidence that came from the research. Evidence-based practice goes beyond the research and includes our clinical expertise as well as patient preferences (Conner, B. T., 2014).

Describe one past/historical unethical breach of research conduct; then, share how you would ensure care of a study participant using one ethical or legal research consideration (guideline/principle).
The Willowbrook Study that started in 1963 brought about outrage because its subjects were children with intellectual disabilities. These children were intentionally infected with hepatitis so the people doing the experiment could track the development of the viral infection. Because of this it led to improved protections for children and other vulnerable populations within the research context (Houser, J., 2021, p. 50). For me, this study being done on children is outrageous. Even if their parents did give consent for this to be done, I don’t think this is ethical. These children had no way of consenting to the treatment. Not only were they children but they were children with mental disabilities. If I were to ever be a part of a research study I would not allow myself to be a part of something like this. I would ensure that my participants were of age to give verbal consent and show a willingness to participate in the study being conducted.
