My Topic will be Language and Speech Delays

Purpose and assignment overview: As stated clearly in Canvas, every student in the class must conduct thorough research on a specific area of special needs. Your final paper must be submitted via Canvas on or before November 5 without any exceptions.

You have a generous 3-week period to complete the assignment, so please manage your time effectively. It is essential to note that late submissions or extension requests for the Special Topic Report will not be accommodated under any circumstances.

I will not honor late assignments or extensions for the Special Topic Report.

The Written Report:

Your research and reactions will be organized into a well-written paper with at least three resources/references. The write-up will be graded on writing mechanics (neatness, organization, spelling, etc.) and content (depth, clarity, accuracy, and demonstration of critical thinking skills).

Part 1: Your written report should be organized as follows:

1. Summary: Please summarize the disability briefly and concisely. You should include information regarding the cause and the most common characteristics of the disability. Additionally, avoid copying and pasting from your sources. Please make sure to correct any spelling, grammar, or punctuation errors.
2. Questions: What are some red flags that a preschool teacher might notice in the classroom that could indicate a child has special needs? In other words, what symptoms? What characteristics? What behaviors should the teacher document? (2-3 paragraphs)
3. Classroom Setting: How can a preschool setting successfully include a child with disabilities? Please describe the modifications that would be made to the room setup, schedule, curriculum, and guidance/interaction with the teacher. Additionally, how would social interaction with other children be fostered? (2-3 paragraphs)
4. Activities: What two activities could a preschool teacher do with all children to help those with disabilities? Please describe the materials and process for use, as well as why they are particularly appropriate for children with disabilities.. (2-3 paragraphs)
5. Community Organizations: Regarding your topic, please provide information about two local organizations, agencies, services, therapies, or interventions available in San Diego County to help you or a child’s parents. Please provide their addresses, phone numbers, and locations. You may also include relevant websites and details about national organizations as additional support. (1-paragraph)
6. Why did you choose this topic, and how do you plan to use the information? (2 paragraphs)

Part 2: Bibliography Page (list your three or more resources/references: website, article, newspaper, textbook, etc.):

It is essential to provide complete and accurate citations for all three sources required. This includes citing the full title, author, publication dates, pages used, and publisher. Suppose your source is a website belonging to an organization or a parent group. In that case, it is essential to include the date the website was updated, the organization supporting it, and all other required information.

IMPORTANT:

It is essential to credit the source of any information you include or refer to in your written report. You may consist of the author and page of the source in parentheses immediately following the information. This applies to both direct quotes and paraphrased information. Remember to refrain from taking credit for something you did not write, and avoid including material taken directly from the internet. A “cut and paste” report does not meet college-level writing standards.

You must summarize and synthesize your research findings rather than copying or repeating someone else’s work. If you are unsure of this, please email me for further clarification. Keep in mind that if you are caught plagiarizing, your grade on this report will be significantly lowered, and in some cases, your work may be returned without a grade.
