The most powerful force shaping the U.S. health care delivery system is managed care. As a health care professional, it is vital that you understand the managed care system, as it impacts all stakeholders. The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate your knowledge of managed care.

As a group, select a current health care organization that is identified as a managed care organization.

Create a 12-15-slide presentation that includes detailed speaker notes with in-text citations for each slide.

In your presentation, explain the following:

1. What a managed care organization (MCO) is and how MCOs have evolved through the U.S health care system. Provide an example.
2. Discuss the accrediting bodies that oversee the organization that your group selected and the significant impact of the accrediting body on the organization.
3. Discuss the organization’s managed care plans, including health maintenance organizations (HMOs), preferred provider organizations (PPOs), and point-of-service (POS) plans, and describe the differences among these three types of managed care plans. Why is each type important to the health care system?
4. What is the impact of MCOs on cost containment, access, and the quality of care?

A minimum of two references, in addition to your textbook, is required for this assignment.

You will work collaboratively with your groups toward the completion and submission of one presentation. After editing and reviewing, just one person in the group will submit the file.

The instructor will observe the participation within the CLC discussion forums, so all materials and communication should be exchanged in the CLC forum between team members. Individuals not participating may lose points at the end of the assignment.

While APA style format is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and in-text citations and references should be presented using APA documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.
