Module 5: Discussion: Emotions and Stress
Using information from this week’s Ted Talk and your textbook (pp. 207 – 233), by 11:59 PM CT on Wednesday post your comments (minimum of 250 words) on the value of negative emotions and the difference between good stress (eustress) and bad stress, citing your sources in APA format. Also, comment on at least two classmates’ posts by 11:59 PM CT Sunday. Each response post should be approximately 100-125 words in length.
Module 5: Gratitude Journal Post: Money and Happiness
For Module 5, you were assigned to read and complete the reading and exercise in your Even Happier Gratitude Journal titled, “Week 45: Money and Happiness” on pages 77-80. For this Gratitude Journal Post, address the following:
- Does concern over wealth and prestige take away from your overall experience of happiness? In what ways? How can this change?
- Happiness List. Post your Happiness List exercise results following the directions on page 80. You should list your top five things you can do every week that provide you (or could provide you) with the most happiness and fulfillment. Then ask whether you are spending sufficient time engaged in these activities. If not, how can you change that? For each thing in the list, estimate how much each activity costs each week in terms of dollars.
- And as always, spend some time on your weekly gratitude list, posting the things you are grateful for.
There is no specific minimum word count requirement for initial Gratitude Journal Posts, but you are expected to write enough to thoroughly address each part of the prompt.
Module 5: Assignment: Reference Page for the Final Project
Expectations for an Essay: Remember, if you opted to write an essay for your Final Project, it should be five-paragraphs, double-spaced, three to four pages in length, with an additional, separate reference page in APA style. It should state three facts about happiness in your first paragraph, explain those three facts in three separate paragraphs, and summarize in your concluding, fifth paragraph. Your facts should present what you see as the top three methods to increase and/or maintain happiness, based on what you’ve learned in the course. Your essay will present information from happiness experts, not your own opinions. Because you are presenting information from others, you will need to give proper attribution. You will do this by including in-text citations and a reference page.
To that end, a minimum of five references are required for your essay. All your references must come from materials in this course. Two of your references must be the two course textbooks: Diener’s Happiness: Unlocking the Mysteries of Psychological Wealth and Ben-Shahar’s Even happier: A Gratitude Journal for Daily Joy and Lasting Fulfillment. For your other three references, there are multiple links within each module that you can cite, including websites that list dozens of articles.
A reference page is a separate page at the end of your essay. This page lists all the references which you have included in your essay. Authors should be listed in alphabetical order by their last names. For this essay, you will follow APA style, though it is not necessary to format your paper with headings that follow APA format. For information on how to correctly create a reference page and the references themselves, consult these resources:
- APA Style: Basic Principles of Reference List Entries
- Online Writing Lab at Purdue University: APA Reference List: Basic Rules
Expectations for a TED Talk or PowerPoint with Voiceover: If you have chosen to create a TED Talk or PowerPoint with voiceover, you are required to cover the same content described in the instructions for the essay, and you must have the same number of references and so forth (although the required page count obviously won’t apply). Your TED Talk or PowerPoint must be at least 6 but no more than 10 minutes in length. A PowerPoint must contain a minimum of seven slides, including (at a minimum) a title slide, introduction slide, at least one slide for each of the three facts about happiness you are presenting, a conclusion slide, and a reference slide. If you do a Ted Talk, it must contain visuals such as images, graphs, or quotes that you wish to highlight.
You are required to have a minimum of five references for your presentation.
For this assignment, submit an APA formatted reference page. You may create it and submit it as a PowerPoint slide so that you can easily insert it into your Final Project. This slide should list all the references which you have included in your presentation. Authors should be listed in alphabetical order by their last names. While there is no APA format for presentations/PowerPoint slides, you will format this slide based on the structure of an APA-formatted Reference page. For information on how to correctly create a reference page and the references themselves, consult the resources listed above (in the instructions for an essay).
