1. Listen, many times, to the film music cue uploaded under CONTENT, called “Assignment 2 Audio File”.

2. Taking on the role of Brilliant Director, design a scene as if this cue were the underscore or non- diegetic
music the composer you hired wrote for it. Yes, this is a reverse process (usually), but as a Brilliant Director
you like to shake things up.
3. Your scene will be designed, on paper, by describing it using appropriate Filmmaking Terms, taken from
the vocabulary you’ve been absorbing since viewing and revisiting the documentary and PPTX presented in
Class 2. (editing, lighting, camera angles.)
Please do not include the terms addressed on slides 1-8 of the Drama and Film presentation. The “Filmmaking
Terms” PDF and the link embedded there, taking you to the Lord of the Rings – oriented documentary you
visited in Class 2 will be all you need for this assignment.
• Words like “plot, genre, protagonist, causal, drama” do not count for points.
• Words like “close up, cross fade, Dutch angle, low key” do.
4. Use 10 (ten) different filmmaking terms in your BRIEF description, in such a way as to indicate you know
exactly what the term means, for 10 marks. Please organise your work into 10 answers.
5. Refer to the music cue via timing AND a BRIEF description of what happens musically there, in order to
justify or rationalise your directorial decision. Employ music terms when doing this, as practice for your
essay. These terms don’t count for points on this assignment. Here’s an example:
Instead of writing, for example, “at :27, where the music speeds up, lighting will change to high key, as
the chase has now moved into the bright hockey arena.”
Write this: “at :27, where the tempo increases, lighting will change to high key, as the chase has now
moved into the bright hockey arena.”
This rationalisation, if done correctly10 times (once for each of the film terms you choose to use) also
adds up to 10 marks. You are, at this point in the course, able to speak and write much more technically
about music, so, cash in on your ability!
6. Obviously, in order to contextualise your description, you will need to create a BRIEF scenario. If I create a
scenario to contextualise the example answer given above, it would go something like this:
SCENARIO: Boppy and Biffy are enemies. At the hockey arena one day, Biffy steals Boppy’s
skates. This cue was composed to underscore the discovery of the theft, and the chase that
ensues.
That’s all you need for a contextualising scenario. This is not a Creative Writing class. (;-)

So, here’s an example of the type of complete answer to be found on a good, organised paper.
Scenario: Boppy and Biffy are enemies. At the hockey arena one day, Biffy steals Boppy’s skates. This cue was
composed to underscore the discovery of the theft, and the chase that ensues.
1. At :00 – :04 of the cue, the music begins with a fast tempo. This is the perfect musical backdrop for my
establishing shot which will focus on the exterior of the hockey arena, before the real action ensues. 2/2
1 mark was scored for proper use of the film term, demonstrating comprehension. 1 mark was scored for the
musically specific rationalization of its use.
Here is my 2 nd of 10 answers:
2. At :05, the melody begins to ascend, and as this could indicate rising tension, my camera begins to slowly
zoom in to the main entrance door. 2/2
Here is my 3rd of 10 answers:
3. AT :05:32, the harmony (tonality) changes to Major, suggesting something positive is happening, and the
camera begins to track Boppy’s dog. 1/2
Why only a score of 1 out of 2 on answer 3? Because at :05:32, the tonality switches to minor, so my directorial
choice based on the music is wrong. Do your best to identifying instruments, time signatures, and tonality. At
least I used the film term in a way that demonstrated comprehension so got 1 point on this answer.
The assignment is out of a total of 20 marks. Please organise your paper into 10 (ten) answers and embolden
your music and film terms.
Maximum Word Count: 600 words. A point will be deducted for every word over this total! Seriously!
Minimum Word Count: 400 words. A point will be deducted for every word under this total! Seriously!
Folks, don’t think I won’t do it. Please don’t get 3/20 on your paper due to a violation of
this really simple concept of word limits.
How to submit your answers: As a Word, Google or Pages Doc, which includes your full name and
student # in the body of the paper.
Please use your last name as the doc’s file name when you save it, i.e., “Millette.doc” This is a big help to
me in keeping track of everyone’s assignment if I download them for off-line marking. An “anonymous”
file can be hard to locate among hundreds of submissions.
