Mini Case Presentation Assignment Information

Case Presentations are often used in counseling to allow a counselor the opportunity to receive feedback from their treatment team. A Case Presentation is a snapshot, which summarizes the client.

A full Case Presentation would contain:

• Description of client: Appearance, dress, gender, age, disposition.
• Presenting Problems: Reasons the client is seeking treatment, any current problems or concerns.
• Findings: Results of previous sessions, interactions, topics, recent changes, issues, diagnoses.
• Progress: How the client is progressing, from the counselor’s perspective.
• Plan: What the counselor is planning to focus and work on with the client in future sessions.

Presenting your client to the treatment team in this format allows others on the treatment team offer feedback, support, and ideas.

Your (mini) Case Presentation Assignment

You will create a mini version of a Case Presentation.

This assignment allows you to demonstrate skills translatable to employment, including:

• Presenting case to a multidisciplinary team, as counseling professionals often do.
• Highlight professional use of PowerPoint, which is primary format of presentation in didactic group settings.
• Demonstrate the use of Alt Text, which is an ADA requirement for those serving the public.
• Establish your ability to identify problem area(s).
• Engage in resource gathering.

Contents of Your Submission

Your submission must contain:

• • • Slide 1 – Client name
      • “Client” does not have to be a real person. You can make up a name.
    • Slide 2 – Client Description
      • Include physical and emotional characteristics of client.
    • Slide 3 – Presenting Problems
      • Use the Problems Faced by College Students List to choose a problem.
    • Slide 4 – End – Plan
      • Your plan should include 2 resources found on UNT campus and 2 resources in the town you live. Resource information must include:
        • Name of agency/organization/person
        • Website
        • Phone
        • Address
        • Service offered

Your presentation should contain at least 3 images, described through using Alt Text.

Review Your Work

Your presentation will be evaluated for content, format, and esthetics.

Get the best score possible by looking over your work before submitting. Honestly, this is one of the easiest ways to ensure you get the most possible points.

Ask yourself:

• Have I included all pages required?
• And have I included all components required on each page?
• Did I save my work as a PowerPoint, not a pdf?
• Did I use Alt Text on my 3 images?
• Does this presentation look professional?
  • Is the color patterns and font I used easy to read?
  • Do all of my slides follow the same pattern (same style font, same size font throughout)?
  • If the PowerPoint was displayed in a classroom would it be easy to see?
  • Have I included all required information but not overloaded the page?
  • Did I spell everything correctly? – just look for the red, wavy lines under any of the words

Problems Faced by College Students List

Time Management
College courses may require more effort than high school. Depending on the number of hours a student is taking and the difficulty level of the courses, students may have multiple assignments due concurrently. Some students work, as well as attend school. Sports or other activities demand additional time.

Debt
College is expensive. Student loan and credit card debt is a burden.

Over-Committed
College students often feel spread too thin. Attending classes, completing homework, meeting for labs, coordinating group projects, having a job, developing new friendships, staying in touch with family and old friends. All of these can be overwhelming.

Depression
Being homesick, having clinical depression, being overwhelmed, being in a new environment. Many things can lead to depression.

Anxiety
Tests, assignments, keeping up a GPA, working, reading, nurturing friendships, social obligations, meeting new people…are only a few of the reasons a student may experience anxiety.

Sickness
To mention only a few reasons the health of a student may be burdened: stress, lack of sleep, too much to do, lack of time for self-care, financial burdens, thinking about future goals.

Social Issues
Many students are establishing new connections, trying to maintain or losing old connections, living alone for the first time, living away from home for the first time.

Substance Misuse or Disorder
Binge drinking is highest among the collegiate-aged. Many students fall prey to peer pressure, decide to drink or use substances experimentally, or develop substance use disorders while in college.

Relationship Issues
In an attempt to prioritize academics, relationships can suffer. Relationship problems can distract a student from schoolwork. Schoolwork can distract a student from relationships. Human beings have a strong desire to belong and be in relation with one another. Relationships can bring distraction, as well as joy.

Choosing a Major
Some students do not know what he or she wants to study. Some students change his or her major while in college. This can create anxiety and pressure, in addition to adding time to the academic career.

The Future
Students who will soon graduate are often overwhelmed when asked what the next step is following graduation. The future is exciting but can also produce fear due to the unknown.

Technical Issues – Computer Literacy
When taking online courses or using electronics for assignments, students can experience consequences as a result of technical issues. Some students are handy with technology. Some do not consider themselves computer literate.

Alt Text is a written description of an image used in a document. In this case, images used on PowerPoint.

The main purpose of Alt Text is to provide a description of the image you are using for a screen reader. A screen reader is software used to allow a person with a visual difference to read content on a computer screen.

Do not use the auto-generated descriptions, as these do not provide enough detail.

Importance of Alt Text

The most important reason to use Alt Text is to describe any images for a person who is sight-impaired or unable to see the image.

Knowing the description of a used image greatly enhances the overall content.

Alt Text is used on websites for search engine optimization, which increases traffic to the website.

Provides description of image to person with weak internet connection.

What is considered good Alt Text?

Look at your image and accurately describe it.

Use a period at the end of your sentence.

The shorter the better, use no more than 125 characters, but adequately describe the image.

If your image contains words or text, make sure to include in Alt Text.

When developing a presentation, consider your audience. Even when the presentation is sent to a small group or submitted as an assignment, imagine how each page will appear when presented to a larger audience on a projector.
