Patient education by medical providers is a task that is commonly overlooked and sometimes holds insignificant importance when it comes to the patient care plan. Providers often rush through information with the patients and rarely give time for questions. Because of this, in addition to overall low levels of health literacy, “patients remain confused about their health care plans after being discharged from the hospital. Furthermore, most patients do not recognize their lack of comprehension. A substantial proportion of medical information is forgotten immediately after discharge” (Yen & Leasure, 2019, p. 284). To combat this, utilizing a teach-back method of instruction is ideal, versus a traditional verbal instruction method. The reason that this method improves patient comprehension, is that patients are required to listen to the instruction, and answer questions about the instruction from the provider in their own words. In addition to utilizing this type of instruction, the verbiage used by providers should be non-jargon language that is easy for patients to understand and interpret. Providers should be using a nonjudgmental tone and come off with a caring, compassionate, and friendly demeanor (Yen & Leasure, 2019).

With respect to recognizing infection, it is important to first identify the type of infection the patient should be looking out for. For instance, if the patient is at risk of cellulitis or a wound infection, teaching signs such as redness, swelling, skin being hot to the touch, and purulent drainage would be important signs to educate on. If the patient is at risk of an infection such as pneumonia, teaching about a productive cough, fever, chest pain, pleuritic pain, and so forth would benefit the patient (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2023). Identifying the patient’s specific risk factors and early signs are the most ideal to tailor the education to the patient. It is important to be clear as to when to seek treatment and the need for treatment compliance. If the patient is symptomatic or has been exposed to a viral pathogen, ensuring proper education about why antibiotics are not an appropriate treatment option is ideal (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2023). Taking time to listen to the patient about what concerns them regarding a disease or infectious process is an important part of showing that they are the leaders of their care team and that the provider is understanding, again, without judgement (Yen & Leasure, 2019).

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have learned a great deal about the role immunological deficits play in determining an individual’s vulnerability to infectious diseases. This new knowledge has had a significant impact on patient education and clinical practice with regard to primary and secondary immunological deficits. We now understand that people with weakened immune systems, such as those suffering from primary immunodeficiency disorders, are more vulnerable to serious infections from pathogens like SARS-CoV-2 (Gray et al., 2022). This has highlighted how crucial it is for these individuals to receive individualized treatment programs, close observation, and early diagnosis. The pandemic has also highlighted how some secondary immune weaknesses can make people more susceptible to infections. These deficits are frequently brought on by medical treatments or underlying diseases. The optimization of immunosuppressive treatments and the promotion of vaccination programs among various patient groups have been sparked by this understanding (Gray et al., 2022). All things considered, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought to light the crucial role that immunological deficits play in an individual’s vulnerability to infectious diseases. This has led us to modify our treatment strategies and improve patient education in order to better safeguard and assist those who have weakened immune systems.
