For instance, if the patient is at risk of cellulitis or a wound infection, teaching signs such as redness, swelling, skin being hot to the touch, and purulent drainage would be important signs to educate on. If the patient is at risk of an infection such as pneumonia, teaching about a productive cough, fever, chest pain, pleuritic pain, and so forth would benefit the patient (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2023). Identifying the patient’s specific risk factors and early signs are the most ideal to tailor the education to the patient. It is important to be clear as to when to seek treatment and the need for treatment compliance. If the patient is symptomatic or has been exposed to a viral pathogen, ensuring proper education about why antibiotics are not an appropriate treatment option is ideal (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2023). Taking time to listen to the patient about what concerns them regarding a disease or infectious process is an important part of showing that they are the leaders of their care team and that the provider is understanding, again, without judgement (Yen & Leasure, 2019).
