Gentle reminder: please keep in mind that these exploratory writings are opportunities for you to practice your literacy craft. By writing consistently, you are working to become a better reader, writer, and thinker.
Moreover, the EWs have a significant impact on your overall grade. This (and every) exploratory writing will play a significant role in the way your final portfolios are graded. Please keep that in mind.
Also, be sure to put appropriate headers in all of your EWs: on the upper left of your paper, include your name, the EW# and title, and the date using three single-spaced lines.
Exploratory Writing 4: Learning to Read and Re-Read like a Writer
Feel free to change the title of this exploratory writing exercise. The title of an essay should always reflect the content of your material, not the assignment.
In order to do this competently (and receive credit for it), you will need to invest at least two hours. Additionally, when citing, you must include both page and edition numbers — for example: (Habits, p. 92).
1) Read: Habits, pp. 90-95.
Think. Reflect. Write: Spend 10 or 15 minutes free writing in response to this reading. Take some time to pay attention to the text. Create some knowledge for yourself. (Set a timer. Do not offer a bland response. Include the results as the first part of this EW.)
2) Read: Habits, pp. 21-25.
Think. Reflect. Write: Complete “Practice Session 2,” p. 26. However, instead of selecting a text from the back of the book, use the attached 2023 short essay by historian Curtis J. Evans, “Martin Luther King Jr. and the Unfinished Work of Nonviolence.”
3) Continue to think, reflect, and write.
After you have completed practice session 2, spend at least 30 minutes applying ideas from the chapter on “Creative Reading” (Habits, pp. 90-95) to Evans’ essay. For example, where do you see these ideas playing out in Evans’ essay? How do you plan to apply these ideas to your own approach to writing? How does this relate to Prose’s article that we read for EW 3?
