Thomas HospitalWhat made me choose my profession…there were many things that drew me to choosing to be a social worker. At a young age I would always strive to be a supporter and an ear to all my friends. I had a constant desire and drive to help people. When I went to college I found that I could do so much with a social work degree. The options seemed endless. That made being a social worker seem very adventurous and not tie me down to one path if I chose to change later in life.

My current job can get crazy but stress is going to be found in most any Job. My pervious job was as The Sexual Assault Services manager for all of Baldwin County with The Lighthouse. That job truly showed me what true stress looks like. I found myself not being able to separate myself from work and I was letting my job consume my life. Then my coping skills composed of running a ton and not really allowing myself to ever decompress….. that’s why they preach about self care and burn out in school. In this position I’ve quickly learned that leaving work at work is a priority. Developing personal coping skills and stress management is ESSENTIAL for essential workers. Therefore I do my best to set out time to reflect, lean on my supervisors when times are heavy at work, and focus on the good little wins each day.

Working in the ED, we see a ton of different things. But I’d say working with Addicts is the hardest. This is because no matter how much you want their lives to improve, they have to really want it to get through it.

We see this a lot when dealing with psych patients. Either they don’t want the level of help that would benefit them the most or they don’t want treatment at all. This happens about weekly so there’s not really one specific instance. I’m Alabama we can not “baker act”. Baker act- is being able to commit a psych patient to an inpatient psych facility against their wishes if it’s best for them. So I’m Alabama we have to go through the court system to get family to probate them before we can commit them. (I have to talk in generalities due to HIPPA). Theoretically we have a patient that is suicidal but over the age of 19. They refuse treatment even though their suicidal lethality is extremely high. They disagree with me that inpatient psych is needed for stabilization. In this situation I have two choices, see if the doctors will sign off on outpatient psych treatment or get the family to probate them so they are required to go to court and then mandated to treatment at a facility. We have to do whatever will be best for the patient and KEEP THEM ALIVE.

In whatever setting you HAVE to meet people where they are at. For the patient that refuses addiction recourses or admitting they have a problem, you have to see where they are at in life and be slow to make any personal judgments. Then you HAVE to hear your patient. You have to look at them as an individual that has their own thoughts and feelings, not as just another patient. When I see people in the ED, they are going through some kind of crisis. This means it is my job to make sure they feel heard and try to recognize where they are coming from.
