I chose this article because I recently read the article on being more of an ethical consumer so I was interested to learn more about deindustrialization. The article begins by explaining what deindustrialization is, “the process by which manufacturing declines in a society or region as a proportion of total economic activity (Crossman, 2019).” Since this concept is the opposite of industrialization, it basically represents a step backwards in the growth of a society’s economy. The article then discusses the main causes in why society may experience a reduction in manufacturing. For example, “a consistent decline in employment in manufacturing due to social conditions (Crossman, 2019).” This could be water depletion and pollution. Another example would be a shift to trading partners where the costs of labor are lower for production. Lastly, “a trade deficit whose effects preclude investment in manufacturing (Crossman, 2019), meaning; when a country purchases more goods than it sells, it then experiences a trade imbalance, which can reduce the resources needed for production.I can connect this article to chapter 13: Environmental problems because it discusses the effects of industrialization. “Scientists believe that global warming has resulted from the increase of global atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases since industrialization has began (pg.433).” I can also connect this article to the structural functionalist perspective, the theory “views social systems (families, workplaces, societies) as composed of different parts that work together to keep the whole system functioning (pg.424)”, and in this cases it is manufacturers to the economy.
