Spend some time thinking about your “Big 8” Socially Constructed Identities using the following categories:

8. Socio-Economic Status/Class
- Create a “Personal Identity Wheel” of your identities which depicts which identities you feel are privileges and which you feel are targeted by creating a pie chart or table. The pie chart represents how aware you are of each identity. For example, if you are more aware that you are White than you are aware that you are able-bodied, White should get a bigger slice of the pie chart. You can create your pie chart or table by hand or on Microsoft Word or PowerPoint.
- As you think about these identities, decide whether you experience these identities as a Privilege or Advantaged identity, targeted or marginalized identity.
- Label your identities as P or A for privileged or advantaged and as T or M for marginalized or targeted.
- Next, consider how aware you are daily of these different identities and how this identity impacts your daily experiences. For example, if you put ‘White’ as your Race, how aware are you every day that you are White? Consider that in relation to your other identities, are you more or less aware that you are White or that you are able-bodied?
Write a response or a video answering the following questions:
- Why are you more or less aware of certain identities?
- Were you more or less aware of your privileged or targeted identities?
- Were there any privileged identities you had not thought about? If so, how can you be more aware of this privilege?
- How did breaking down your various identities feel?
- Were any categories more or less difficult to think about?
- What does it mean to have a privileged identity? What does it mean to have a targeted identity?
- What can you do to become more aware of your privileged identities? How will this make you a better social worker?
