OVERVIEW

There are several facets to the personal and academic development students experience in higher
education. To better understand these experiences and improve practices to support students,
several theories and models of student development have been established over time. These
theories provide a framework in which practitioners and researchers can determine best practices
for supporting the holistic development of students and preparing them to be career ready. This
assignment is a brief essay in which you will research a student development theory related to
the current issue chosen as your research topic for the Analytical Essay. This essay will
eventually become a section in your final Analytical Essay assignment.
INSTRUCTIONS
Study the Read: Theories and Models of Student Development article by Long (2012), linked
in the course. You will choose one of the theories discussed in Long’s article to research further.
Note: If you want to use a theory not included in the Long article, please email your instructor
for approval before completing and submitting the assignment.
Begin your essay by describing the theory and noting the major theorist. This part should be 1 -2
paragraphs in length.
Next, discuss how the theory has informed current research on your topic by including two
examples of peer-reviewed empirical studies that used this theory as a framework. You will
describe the studies and discuss how the findings support or challenge the theory’s central
premise. This part should be 1 – 2 paragraphs in length.
Among your citations for this assignment, include the original work of the chosen theorist.
Reference the book/article in which the theorist(s) first presented or refined the theory. For
example, do not cite a secondary source about Tinto’s (1993) theory of student departure, but cite
the primary source and seminal contribution to the field by the original theorist:
Tinto, V. (1993). Leaving college: Rethinking the causes and cures of student attrition (2nd ed.).
University of Chicago Press.
You must also include citations from at least two scholarly peer-reviewed or news article sources
published within the past five years. Additionally, reference the Long (2012) article, if
appropriate.
Your essay must be 500 words, not including the required title and references pages.
Current APA formatting must be evident throughout all areas of the assignment.
