please respond to the following discussion post as a peer making a comment. “These “collaborative” competencies, which link to the five core competencies identified by the Institute of Medicine, are foundational for all health professions to work effectively within and between professions, with patients, families, and communities, as well as in the public policy arena. The core competencies are built on each profession’s discipline-specific competencies and can be used to guide the training of both current students and experienced professionals (Schmitt et al., 2011). Healthcare caregivers are taking care of a diverse group of people from many diverse backgrounds. With that in mind, it is just as important to have a diverse workforce taking care of these patients. Teams and teamwork: Utilize team dynamics and relationship-building values to function well in a variety of team roles as you plan and provide patient- and population-centered care that is safe, timely, efficient, effective, and equitable (Schmitt et al., 2011). Bringing your background into your current profession’s role is something only you can bring to that role. For example, when I was a PSR (Patient Service Representative) coming from a PCP (Primary Care Physician) Office to a specialist office I knew a lot of things that went on in the background at PCP office, prior to the patient coming to the specialist’s office. Having that knowledge helped my new team get and process referrals faster and as a result we were able to obtain insurance authorizations soon, therefore getting the patient scheduled sooner. Interprofessional communication: Maintaining health and treating illness as a team requires responsive and accountable communication with patients, families, communities, and other health professionals (Schmitt et al., 2011). Having the knowledge and understanding of how to communicate with patients or other caregivers is something that everyone does a little differently. Since everyone has a unique way of communicating, you can learn from one another how to communicate better with one another and with the patients. When I first started working in healthcare, I was unsure how to communicate with providers, other caregivers, and patients. I was lucky enough to be taught by a senior caregiver. They taught me the best way to communicate with providers, other caregivers, and patients and I have taken that knowledge and taught other new caregivers.
